Carpenter’s Chisels and Square for Woodworking

Woodworking takes the right tools and equipment for the jobs you want completed with satisfaction. The right tools lead you on a path to creating things you never imagined. Right now, if you are just starting out, you might just want to make a few things. But as you move on, you will be surprised by your creativity and imagination. You will be shaping and making the projects of your dreams. Having the correct tools at hand makes these dreams come true sooner.

The chisel is one of the most common tools in a woodworker’s workshop. It helps in cutting and shaping edges of many different types of materials. Chisels work on wood as well as on stone or metal. When shopping for a chisel, make sure it’s the right fit for you. Name brands usually offer a good quality of steel for your work. Look at the structure of the item to make sure it is made properly. Ask a salesperson or bring along an expert when shopping for a chisel.

Squares are also important when putting together various projects. They help you with accuracy when you are designing sizes and lengths. A variety of squares are available to take on many different jobs. Use two or three different squares to make sure the right ones are always available during your work.

Antique Table Saw

You have plenty of different saws to choose from for your woodworking shop and it is a good idea to have variety. A trim saw may work for some projects or a router saw or handsaw may work well for others. You will learn the type of saws you need as you become more familiar with the projects you work on. Look at the different sites on the Internet to find out more information about particular saws or other items. This will give you an idea of what you need, depending on what projects you have in mind.

Find tools at hardware or home improvement stores. But you can also get good quality tools at yard sales or discount stores. Check out these products yourself for durability. Also be sure to clean and take care of your new tools regularly to keep them lasting a long time.

It Always Begins With Shelf Plans

Where Does the DIY Builder Go for Shelf Plans?

Every do-it-yourselfer learns in different ways and has different approaches to their work.  No one is the same, but DIYers typically love to depend on themselves to create and repair whatever they need around the house or yard.  One of the most common projects, and perhaps one of the easiest for beginners to start with, is bookshelves.  So, where do you find great shelf plans?

That depends on how you learn.  Some of us like to have written directions, supplemented by visual diagrams and illustrations.  Others like to have a teacher, showing them how to do each step of the project.  Still others like to sketch out their designs and try to map out the plans themselves.  If you are just beginning, there are a host of helpful resources that you can rely on.

It Ends With A Beautiful Result

One great one is the video series we’ve put together from our sources on Youtube.  This series begins with  video tutorials on how to build a set of upright bookshelves.  You will find a series of videos we’ve put together to help even the newest beginner feel comfortable with building a project similar to the one pictured below.

You can also do a quick Google search and find endless sites that can help.  Not all of these are equal, and some provide shelf plans that are less detailed, thorough, or precise.  Weed these out and find sites that can help you make the pictures in your head a reality in your home.

In the first three videos below, you’ll see how it all begins with just a sketch or a set of plans.  It always begins this way, and this step 1 is the most important of all.  Your plans will help you estimate the cost of your project, and will guide you, step-by-step along the way.  The last video is about choosing the right materials for the job.  After these first steps, you are ready to work on your project.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video series must be worth its weight in gold.  We hope you find them helpful.

Intricately Carved Vase Shelf

West Virginia Business Built on Hard Work and Good Plans

Beth and David Rheuark are living proof of how great plans can come to fruition.  This West Virginia couple turned shelf plans and other wood working projects into a thriving local business.  Like the best book shelves, this couple is sturdy, reliable, and strong.

The Rhuearks’s shop, Hillbilly Woodworks, features handmade cedar chests, decorative shelves, benches, custom cabinets, and much more.  Owning a retail shop had been a longtime dream of the couple.

Wood Profits BannerThey made it a reality when David returned from a military hospital after suffering an injury in the second Gulf War.  A veteran of both wars, David, and his wife, Beth, decided that there was no time like the present to start working on their goal.

Just like you would follow a set of well-drafted shelf plans, Beth and David followed their plans, which included fixing up a dilapidated old building and turning it into a shop worthy of their great handiwork.  When they first saw the location, Beth thought it was a little beyond help, but David was able to see the end product, as well as each step in the process to help it become what they wanted.  With as much care and attention as they put into each of their decorative shelves, cabinets, and chests, the Rhuearks transformed this rundown store into a beautiful shop.

The meticulous attention to detail and passion that the best woodworkers bring to their craft is exactly the qualities that helped David and Beth achieve a lifelong dream.  The lesson for all of us?  Whether our goal is to build a gorgeous set of decorative shelves or to scale Mount Everest, we have to start with a good set of plans.  From there, we can make anything possible if we go step by step and keep working.
